Blog Action Day 2010

Written by dana on 10.16.2010

Today’s water crisis is not an issue of scarcity, but of access. More people in the world own cell phones than have access to a toilet. And as cities and slums grow at increasing rates, the situation worsens. Every day, lack of access to clean water and sanitation kills thousands, leaving others with reduced quality of life. 884 million people lack access to safe water supplies; approximately one in eight people.

Beauty is more than skin deep - The Story of Cosmetics

Written by dana on 7.24.2010

The old saying that "Beauty is only skin deep" can't be farther from the truth.  The Story of Cosmetics, hosted by Annie Leonard, was released earlier this week to educate us on the use of toxic chemicals in everyday health and beauty products.  The video talks about the hazards to consumers, salon workers and the environment.

Leonard's other videos include "Story of Stuff", "Story of Electronics", "Story of Bottled Water" and "Story of Cap & Trade". For more information check out the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics

Great Gear from We Add Up

Written by dana on 4.19.2010

Last spring, I "splurged" and bought myself a new t-shirt...but not just any old t-shirt, I bought a one-of-a-kind shirt from We Add Up.  Their organic cotton shirts are custom printed with an individual number showing your position in our sequential global count of people who are taking steps to do their part. As the count grows, we demonstrate to the world that “WE ADD UP.”  Their slogan is "No one can do everything. Everyone can do something."

They have cute, simple logos for each of 26 different ways we can help fight climate change (I think my favorites are the Shower Together and Breastfeed logos!)  But, if you can't make up your mind, there's a t-shirt with all of the actions.
We Add Up - Stop Climate Change

In honor of Earth Week, WE ADD UP is offering 10% off your order atwww.weaddup.com Enter coupon code: EarthWeek2010 at checkout (Valid thru Sunday, Apr 25 2010.)  They'll even throw in a free bumper sticker to slap on your car, to be just like Green Mom On-The-Go (who happens to be #12,160 in case you were wondering.)

National Ground Water Awareness Week

Written by dana on 3.08.2010

The week of March 7-13 was designated by Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman as Groundwater Awareness Week in Nebraska.  Conveniently, it is also National Groundwater Awareness week.
More than 90 percent of the fresh water in the United States and around the world is groundwater. Ground Water Awareness Week spotlights groundwater as a valuable and renewable resource.
The Groundwater Foundation, a non-profit organization based in Lincoln, NE unveiled their new campaign Let’s Keep It Clean!, intended to inform citizens about groundwater and motivate individuals to conserve and protect this valuable natural resource.
Most people do not realize the impact they can have on groundwater. Anything poured or spilled onto the ground's surface can end up in the groundwater supply, even years later, and contaminated groundwater can ruin human and animal health. The Groundwater Foundation offers the following tips to help you protect our groundwater:
  • Not sure what to do with hazardous substances? Contact local waste authorities about proper disposal of hazardous substances such as pesticides/herbicides, antifreeze, fertilizer, paint/paint thinner, oil and chemicals.
  • Never flush unneeded or expired medications down the toilet or drain. If no other disposal options exist, such as a take-back program at a local pharmacy, alter medications in some way and place them in the trash. Alteration means adding or doing something to make medications unpalatable, undesirable, or unusable.
  • If you own a water well, have your water tested annually. Also test if there is a change in the odor, taste or smell.
  • If you own a septic tank, have it cleaned and serviced regularly to prevent a breakdown that could pollute your groundwater.

Turn trash into ca$h for the PTA

Written by dana on 12.12.2009

Wouldn't it be great to keep trash out of the landfill and help a great cause at the same time? You can do just that by supporting the “Green Mom Bar Brigade”. Save your energy, granola, nutrition, cereal and protein bar wrappers – for each one turned in, $.02 will be donated to the Peter Sarpy Elementary School PTA.
Green Mom On-The-Go has teamed up withTerraCycle as a member of the Bar Brigade, sponsored by Clif Bar and Balance Bar. As an eco-friendly innovator, TerraCycle will convert the used wrappers into unique accessories and other upcycled products.
All energy, granola, nutrition, cereal and protein bars with an inner foil lining are acceptable (see photo for examples). Wrappers without the foil lining and candy bar wrappers cannot be accepted (sorry!)
To turn in your wrappers or to set up a Bar Brigade collection location (work, school, ???) contact green mom on-the-go.

Blowin in the wind

Written by dana on 10.14.2009

Prairie Wind: Nebraska's Energy Harvest, Thursday, Oct 15 at 7pm.
Statistics show Nebraska ranks sixth in the nation for wind energy potential, but only 22nd based on how much is generated. There are only four or five states with cheaper electricity than Nebraska's public power system provides its customers.  Many other states are aggressively adding wind capacity, and many experts wonder if wind could help turn the wheels of Nebraska's economy, too.  Nebraska's newest wind development, the Elkhorn Ridge Wind Facility near Bloomfield, Neb., includes 27 towers that generate more energy than any other wind site in the state. The site was developed and is operated by private companies, but the Nebraska Public Power District purchases the energy the site's turbines create.
Prairie Wind explores legislative, technical and cost issues, as well as how local communities could benefit from Nebraska harnessing the power of the wind. The program also examines how farmers and ranchers could use wind energy in their operations, and how landowners could reap economic benefits from a wind structure that takes less than an acre out of production.
